HAPPY BIRTHDAY TYSON

Tyson has a birthday March 15, 2013

Hello Tyson, we have picked a story from GGGrandpa Alexander Baird to share with you on your birthday.  We call it the Molasses Mishap.  Alexander is Lanny's mother's grandfather.

Alexander (born in Scotland) was at sea for a good many years.  He had served in the U.S. Navy for over three years, then worked on ships hauling cargo from country to country. Eventually he joined the Navy again.  This experience takes place in between the years of his service in the Navy.

Said Alexander:
"We then went to Calcutta and loaded for Boston.  She was one of the finest ships I ever was in, a good captain and good mates, good grub all around.

One little mishap we had while lying at Calcutta.  One day we had fresh soup with large cubes in it, or as the shore people call them, dumplings.  We wanted some molasses on them and the mate would not let us have any.  So we all struck.  We would not go to work.  We were idle about an hour when the captain came on board.  Said he to the second mate, 'Where are the men?'

'Oh,' said he.  'they have struck.'

'What's the matter?' asked the captain.

'Why,' said the mate,  'they wanted molasses on their dumplings and I, sir, would not let them get any.'

The captain came forward to the forecastle and said, 'Come out here, two of you.'  Out we went to see what he wanted.  'Go down to the forepeek and break out a barrel of molasses,' he said.

Down we went and got one out good and fast. 'Come here,' he says, 'some of you, and hoist this barrel up.'

We did so.  The captain got an ax and broke the head in.  'Now,' says he, 'get that into the forecastle and eat molasses until you're sick of it.'  We did as bidden and the strike was at an end.

'Mr. Berry,' says the captain, 'have you no sense with a lot of sailors? an old man like you!  Always let them have anything in reason!'

We have molasses galore.  Everything was molasses until we got so tired of molasses that we didn't want to see any within miles of us.  Nobody wanted molasses."

What's for your birthday dinner?  Why soup with dumplings and molasses, and BBQ steak basted with molasses, and cake with molasses frosting. yum yum!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU.
